I was asked by Mutya ng Pilipinas President, Rene Salud to pre-judge the Mutya ng Pilipinas Beauty Pageant in its Designer's gown competition, Held at the Edsa Shangrila Hotel July 29, 2009.  It was also the press presentation of the 36 contestants from not only all over the Philippines but from other Filipino communities from around the world.  They were all beautiful, actually judging a beauty pageant is hard work, its so difficult to choose from several beautiful women each with their own uniqueness and charm.  The contestants were pleasantly dressed by their corrresponding Fashion designers in Sabutan-inspired gowns.  Sabutan is an indigenous material from from the Province of Aurora, which is also the host province for this year promoting ecotourism.  Sabutan is orginally used to create bags, mats, hats, but this material tested the creativity of the fashion designers wherein they would incorporate the Sabutan material into their creations.  And it is so wonderful to see their creative juices appear on the contestant's gowns.  It was truly a sight to see.

In the pictures above, first is a picture of some of the judges namely, from top to bottom..Miss Crispina Belen of Manila Bulletin, Miss Maria Benipayo former beauty queen, Jay R Valentin model, fashion designer Oscar Peralta, MPI President Mama Rene Salud and your truly.  Also some of the pictures shown above were taken during the judging process and some photos taken with the reigning Mutya ng Pilipinas International on my right and Mutya ng Pilipinas Tourism on my left.

Watch Mutya ng Pilipinas Coronation Night in Aurora Province this coming Aug 9, 2009 on ABC Channel 5.

Difference bet. Vaser and Power assisted lipo, my personal experience

Doing high volume liposuction and multiple area lipo, is a very physically demanding job, especially when patients are men.  Male body physique is more fibrous, tissues are tougher than the soft female counterparts.  Being a female surgeon, this poses a challenge for me.  So the use of the power-assisted liposuction (PAL) came to my mind to help me make the lipo easier especially when I only need to do a debulking procedure and not necessarily a sculpting procedure.

I had the opportunity to use it thru a friend.  We used her Power assisted lipo and the VASER liposuction on one patient who wanted to do a full torso lipo.  I also encouraged her to try out the VASER so we can compare.  To make the procedure short, I did the patient’s chest and she started out on the patient’s abdomen.  Power-assisted liposuction is a motorized handle with a special cannula that moves forward and backward automatically and vibrates as well.  There was less resistance in burying thru the thick fat, less effort on the surgeon, however, there was so much vibration, not only on the handle of the machine but the vibration is also reflected in the fatty compartment of the patient.  It is very traumatic and I’m sure it does not differentiate whether you are sucking out fat or connective tissues.  The aspirate was quite bloody and a big part of the aspirate was fluid and not fat.  It may lessen the effort of the surgeon but it does not shorten the operative time.  It’s not a very efficient machine.  And due to the vibration emitted, one cannot do superficial liposuction, cannot go near the rib area, and of course cannot do the face.  After the lipo her hands were shaking due to the vibrations emitted by the machine.  It’s like holding on a jackhammer.

My doctor friend tried out the VASER liposuction, I showed her the different probes and the ventex cannulas that go with it.  She tried the VASER and she realized that she did not have to give too much effort in doing the liposuction because the fat was already emulsified and very soft.  Operating time was shorter and she was able to take out more fat, the aspirate was less bloody and the percentage of fat is around 80% of the total aspirate, there was less water aspirated.  She only did gentle strokes, no vibrations on the hands, and there was no surgeon fatigue.  She actually appreciated how nice and very efficient the VASER machine is, how it can take out more fat and sculpt the body to perfection.  She was very happy and was also thinking of buying a VASER system of her own.

This was a first hand trial and I was able to appreciate more my VASER Machine.  Buying a Power-assisted lipo machine is out of the question.

Contours promotes Beauty tourism at PITF 2009 in Cebu

It was the Philippine International Tourism Fair  held at the Marco Polo Hotel in Cebu June 25-27, 2009.  Contours attended to promote medical tourism specifically beauty tourism.  We had a booth at the fair and other establishments as well such as travel agencies, hotels and resorts.  Contours was the only medical facility in the fair.

In a seminar, I gave a talk on how Contours got into the business of medical tourism.  I gave m personal experience on how the internet has shrunk the world.  Most of my clients are not locals, mostly foreigners, balikbayans and OFW.  Because of the webiste, they land on my site whenever they search for words such as liposuction Philippines, Vaser etc.  Then they land on the website and inquire directly.  I also discussed with them the potential of medical tourism in the country as our doctors are internationally trained and our standards are world class, we can competitively compete with other countries especially that the prices in other countries for such procedures are much more expensive than ours.  My request is the coordination of travel agencies, hotels and resorts to facilitate possible clients in their travel, accommodations, transfers, possible tours that come along with their beauty holiday.

Medical tourism is another venue to promote the country internationally, to attract more visitors to come and see not only the beauty of the Philippines but also the talent and intelect of their doctors.
